Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
I struggled with this one. The goal was to list the ten characters you like or dislike despite that feeling being an unpopular opinion. I rarely actually acknowledge popular opinions (hermit alert!), so I had to recruit my sister, and we argued……
1. Rowan from Queen of Shadows by Sarah J. Maas
I HATE ROWAN! I find it SUUUUUPPPER creepy that a Fae, who is hundreds of years old, has romantic feelings for a teenager….. EWWWWWW! I have similar problems with Tamlin from A Court of Thorns and Roses.
2. Kai from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Kai is just a little bit too insipid for my liking. Although he is busy trying to save his country, he still feels a bit too flat. Especially when we compare him to Thorne who is just WONDERFUL. *sworn*
3. Snape from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
I know that there are a lot of people who dislike Snape, but there are also a lot who think that he ultimately redeemed himself. I used to be one of them, but after re-reading the series, I don’t like him one iota. And most of this is because of his treatment of Neville – there was no need to be mean to that little boy!
4. Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
The book (and the character) that started my apprehension of the classics. I just didn’t get why everybody thought that Holden was the perfect embodiment of the disillusioned youth. He was a massive pain in the arse and I enjoyed nothing about the book. Even after checking Sparknotes (because I MUST have been missing something), I still didn’t see why Holden resonated with so many….
5. Jace from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
Jace is just GROSS! His whole attitude towards Clary is really overbearing, and their relationship (even with incest possibility) is just creepy. There are shining male examples in this series (in Alec and Simon), and Jace is just YUCKY compared to them.
6. Aspen from The Selection series by Kiera Cass
Aspen was an annoying subplot. He broke it off with America, and yet he wanted her back?! And he acted like some martyr for protecting her even though she didn’t want him/he didn’t want her?! I just wanted to concentrate on observing the trainwreck that was the Selection itself (a bit like The Bachelor….), and Aspen wasn’t all that interesting.
7. Etienne St Clair from Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
He has a girlfriend, yet he insists on flirting with Anna. He refuses to talk – talking is kind of important in relationships. And Anna sees him through rose-coloured glasses – he has so many problems and this girl is falling into a trap!
8. Tris Prior from the Divergent series by Veronica Roth
Tris is pretty annoying – her entire life has changed and she is busy trying to attract Four’s attention instead of being the best for herself. And it just gets worse and worse as the story goes on. I liked certain elements of the book, but Tris was not one of them.
9. Claire Fraser from Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Claire is a bit stupid. Not only does it take her a long time to realise and react in a decent manner to her situation, but she seems to forget about her husband for the attractive Scotsman?! She’s also a bit of an idiot – it is a DANGEROUS time; stop trying to be a hero.
10. Cadence from We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Poor little rich girl. Somehow she makes her family’s private island seem like the worst possible place in the world. Even though the ending was a punch to the gut, Cadence needs to get her head out of her arse.
